Prerequisites
Yuba Community College District intends to guide students into the courses in which they will have the greatest chance for academic success. Some courses have prerequisites, corequisites, or advisories (recommended preparation) in their description. Following are the definitions for prerequisites, corequisites, and advisories or recommended preparation.
Prerequisite—Defined as a course requirement that a student must meet in order to demonstrate current readiness for enrollment in a course or education program.
Corequisite—Is a course that a student is required to take in the same semester as another course, i.e., Biology 15 requires a lab such as Biology 15L.
Advisory or Recommended Preparation—Is a condition of enrollment that a student is advised, but not required, to meet before, or in conjunction with, enrollment in a course, or educational program.
State regulations mandate that students have met the prerequisite for any course in which they are enrolled. Documentation must be on file (placement examination, college/high school transcripts, etc.) verifying completion of English and Mathematic prerequisites. Students can complete the Requisite Equivalency Verification Form and return it with the documentation to the Admissions & Records Office for processing. They can also complete this form and return it to their Counselor during their Counseling appointment.
Students may also challenge a prerequisite if they can show that grounds exist for one under the following conditions:
- Prerequisite course is not available
- Prerequisite has not been validated
- Student has the knowledge or ability to succeed in the course without meeting the prerequisite;or
- Student believes the prerequisite is discriminatory or is being applied in a discriminatory manner.
Students who wish to challenge a prerequisite should consult a Counselor.
