What are SLOs?

Student learning outcomes (SLOs) are statements that specify what students will know, be able to do, or be able to demonstrate when they have completed or participated in a program/activity/course/project. Outcomes are usually expressed as knowledge, skills, attitudes or values.

According to the ACCJC SLOs are the knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes that a student has attained at the end (or as a result) or his/her engagement in a particular set of collegiate experiences.

Why are SLOs important?

It is not enough to state what is expected that students will know or be able to do by the end of their time in a course or program; the next step is assessment – that is to determine if students are gaining skills or knowledge as a result of participating in a class or college program. The purpose of assessment is to use results as a starting point for meaningful dialogue about the next steps in planning and improvement in order to maximize student success. Please note that discussion arising from assessment results are not evaluation of individual faculty members, rather the focus is on student achievements and needs.

How to complete SLOs?

Woodland Community College has an electronic one-stop center to collect, organize and track Student Learning Outcomes. TracDat, implemented in Spring 2011 and rolled out to the campus in Fall 2011, allows faculty, adjunct, and other staff to login to a secure site and keep all SLO and program review information organized.

Woodland Community College iSLO Survey Results Summer 2017

Overview

The institutional student learning outcomes survey was administered in the summer of 2017. The survey was piloted with students who had petitioned and successfully graduated from WCC in the spring of 2017. Prior to the survey being implemented, the SLO committee at WCC reviewed the instrument. The committee provided suggestions on the wording of questions and instrument length. This was instrumental in ensuring questions truly captured the eight institutional student learning outcomes.

Once the survey was ready for administration, an email invitation was sent to all students who petitioned to graduate and graduated. A total of 22 students fully completed the survey. In the upcoming 2018-2019 academic school year institutional student learning outcomes will be measured for each incoming student at entry, once during progress and upon graduation.
