MUSIC3 Music Appreciation
Study of music in relation to the humanities; music and composers of the western world from medieval to the 20th Century. Topics studied include but are not limited to elements of music, basic musical forms, music periods, styles, and the role of music and musicians in the western world.

MUSIC10 Music Fundamentals
An introduction to the notation and primary elements of tonal music. Incorporates the following concepts: staff notation in treble and bass clefs; rhythm and meter; basic properties of sound; intervals; diatonic scales and triads; and diatonic chords. Development of skills in handwritten notation is expected.

MUSIC12 Jazz Appreciation
General survey of jazz from its original and early development to present day; extensive listening to recorded and live performance supports the lecture material. Students will become acquainted with the musical styles and the historical and social context of jazz, along with the techniques and personalities of artists who made original contributions and influenced other artists.

MUSIC15 Popular Music in The United States
A survey of popular music in the United States from about 1850 to the present. Covers American Civil War songs, ragtime, blues, jazz, songwriting, musical theater, country music, Latin music styles, rock, and current trends.

MUSIC16 World Music
An introduction to music as experienced through various world cultures including, but not limited to, Asia, India, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and South America. Subcultures, such as Native American music and Ethnic North American music are also studied.

MUSIC34 Concert Choir
Concert Choir is the study and performance of choral literature including classical works, contemporary pieces, and music of many diverse cultures. The course includes study and performance of representative accompanied and unaccompanied works for a mixed choir. Public performances, festivals, and field trips may be required. Students who wish to take Concert Choir multiple times can enroll in the noncredit version of this course (MUSIC 534).

MUSIC41B Piano II
This course is the second class in a three-course sequence designed to build skills from Piano I. The second course includes more deliberate work on music notations, basic piano techniques, major and minor full octave scales, sight-reading, basic I-IV-V harmonic progressions with all melodies now being performed in the expanded range of an octave.

MUSIC41C Piano III
This course is the third and final course sequence designed to build skills from Piano II. The third course includes more deliberate work on music notation, expanded rhythm base to include 8th notes, dynamics, upbeats, basic piano techniques, major and minor full octave scales, sight-reading, basic I-IV-V harmonic progressions and expanded chord progression with dominant chords in a few different tonal centers, with all melodies now being performed in expanded range of an octave. Students will expand knowledge of keyboard harmony and theory, sight reading, and keyboard repertoire, including solo and ensemble performances.

MUSIC41A Piano I
This course is an introduction to beginning keyboard skills, including music notation. It includes basic piano techniques, major and minor five finger patterns, major scales, sight-reading and basic chord progressions, as they are encountered in beginning piano music.

MUSIC43 Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band is open to students who play a wind band instrument. This course is the study and performance of the Symphonic Band repertoire. Collegiate level band, involving basic studies in musical interpretation, advanced performance concepts, critical sight reading, and extended technical exercises; extensive practice and frequent public performance. Public performances and field trips may be required. Students who wish to take Symphonic Band multiple times may enroll in the noncredit version of this course (MUSIC 543).
