Woodland Community College (WCC) has received a prestigious Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to launch the Escalera Initiative, aimed at increasing Hispanic/Latinx student success in STEM fields.
STEM careers are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying sectors, yet Hispanic/Latinx students face barriers in accessing these opportunities, making up only 8% of the STEM workforce. The Escalera Initiative, backed by a $3 million, five-year grant, seeks to address this disparity by offering academic support and workforce development programs to underrepresented students.
Named after the Spanish word for “ladder,” the program symbolizes WCC’s mission to provide the tools for students to achieve economic mobility and success in STEM education and careers. The initiative is expected to be a transformative force, empowering students to break down barriers and thrive in high-impact fields.
