Woodland Community College Receives Dr. John W. Rice Award Honorable Mention

Woodland Community College received an honorable mention selection for the Dr. John W. Rice Student Success Award. Established in 2001, the Dr. John W. Rice Awards recognize community colleges leading the way in progressing student success and equity. The California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) evaluated statewide data in meeting Vision 2030, which included student success outcomes and increases on the number of students completing transfer-level English and math.

After evaluation of statewide data, Woodland College was selected as a finalist. Selected colleges have demonstrated the most significant gains in outcomes, particularly in ensuring that all students complete gateway transfer-level English and math within one year of their first attempt. Special emphasis was placed on colleges that achieved the greatest closure of equity gaps between students of color in transfer-level completion over the past three years.

In addition to increases in students completing transfer-level English and math, Woodland Community College also had a 48% surge in associate degree completions. Woodland Community College’s success is a testament to the unwavering dedication of its faculty and staff, whose commitment to excellence and equity has made this recognition possible. This recognition underscores the impact of their hard work. As the college prepared for the start of the Fall semester on August 12, the faculty and staff begin the year with this continued commitment to the betterment of student outcomes and the ongoing pursuit of educational equity.

The annual Dr. John W. Rice Award winners were announced on July 22 during a statewide event held at the Citizen Hotel in Sacramento. Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Ph.D., daughter of John addressed the crowd via video and Clara Rice, widow of John, was a special guest. Palo Verde College won the Dr. John W. Rice Student Success Award.
