Common Course Numbering
What You Need to Know
Common Course Numbering (CCN) is a statewide initiative of the California Community Colleges (CCC) designed to create greater consistency and clarity in course identification and is now in place across the California Community College system. Under CCN, beginning Fall 2025, comparable courses across California community colleges share the same course number, regardless of where the course is offered.
CCN supports student mobility, reduces confusion when selecting courses, and strengthens transfer alignment across the system and with four-year institutions, including campuses within the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems.
The goal of CCN is to make course selection clearer, support smoother transfers, and reduce confusion as students move through their academic pathway. CCN will eventually assign common numbers, titles, and course descriptions for the highest volume transfer courses.
CCN Structure
CCN uses a different structure for labeling its courses compared to local Woodland Community College (WCC) courses:
SUBJECT
Based on 4-letter abbreviations.
COURSE TYPE IDENTIFIER
C = Common Course Number. Local WCC courses do not have a “C” identifier.
COURSE NUMBER (####)
- 0XXX – Non-transferable
- 1XXX – 100-level course
- 2XXX – 200-level course
- 3XXX – 300-level course
- 4XXX – 400-level course
- 9XXX – Noncredit
COURSE SPECIALTY IDENTIFIER
Some courses may have additional letters at the end of a course number, such as:
- H = Honors Course
- L = Lab Only Course
- S = Support Course
- E = Embedded Support
| Example: ANTH C1001L | |
| SUBJECT: | ANTH = Anthropology |
| COURSE TYPE: | C = Common Course Number |
| COURSE NUMBER: | 1001 = 100-Level Course |
| COURSE SPECIALTY IDENTIFIER: | L = Lab Only Course |
How This Affects You
- Completed courses still count. If you took a course before CCN was implemented, you do not need to retake the updated CCN version if the course was completed with a passing grade.
- Course numbers and course titles may look different. Some courses in your education plan may now appear with updated course numbers and titles.
- Phased CCN transition. The CCN transition is happening over phases, beginning with Phase I effective Fall 2025. Updates to courses affected by CCN changes will be included on this page for reference.
- Transfer is more seamless. CCN helps ensure your coursework aligns consistently across California community colleges and with four-year universities.
