Federal financial aid is typically calculated using a standard formula based on information provided in your FAFSA. While this process is designed to treat all applicants equally, the U.S. Department of Education allows colleges to make case-by-case adjustments for students who experience significant changes in their financial situation. This process is known as a Professional Judgment.
When to Request a Professional Judgment
You may be eligible to request a Professional Judgment if you or your family has experienced one or more of the following:
- Loss or significant reduction of income
- Divorce or separation (student or parent)
- Death of a spouse or parent
- Unusually high out-of-pocket medical expenses
- Other exceptional circumstances affecting your ability to pay for college
What You Need to Know
- Each request is reviewed individually. Approval is not guaranteed and must be supported with appropriate documentation.
- All documentation is required. Federal regulations require colleges to collect and review third-party documentation before making any adjustments.
- Adjustments are only made when clearly justified. The college must document and retain the reasoning behind any changes to FAFSA data or cost of attendance.
How to Start the Process
- Contact the Woodland Community College Financial Aid Office. Start by meeting with one of our financial aid staff members who can help you determine if your situation qualifies.
- Submit a Professional Judgment Request. You’ll be asked to fill out a request form and provide supporting documents related to your situation.
- Wait for Review. The Financial Aid Office will notify you once your request has been reviewed and a decision has been made.
