Question

How do I clear a non-resident flag and charge?

Answer

If you’ve been flagged as a non-resident and charged out-of-state tuition but believe you qualify for in-state residency, you’ll need to submit a Residency Reclassification request.

Here’s how to start:

  • Contact Admissions & Records to review your current residency status

  • Gather documents that show you’ve lived in California for at least one year and one day before the start of the term (such as a CA ID, lease agreement, pay stubs, utility bills, etc.)

  • Complete the Residency Reclassification form and submit your supporting documents by the published deadline

If you’re undocumented or meet AB 540 or SB 68 criteria, you may qualify for in-state tuition through a separate process. Ask about the California Nonresident Tuition Exemption form.
