FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q: Do I need to be enrolled at WCC in the class for which I am seeking tutorial services?
A: Yes, you must be enrolled in the class at Woodland Community College. If you are taking the class at another school/college, we are not able to assist you.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Tutorial sessions are FREE to our students.
Q: For what classes do you offer tutorial services?
A: We strive to have tutors available for all subjects here at WCC. However, the availability of tutors may be limited to their schedules and to the demand for their help. If we do not have a tutor for a class, we will try to find one.
Q: How much time will I have for each session?
A: The maximum time for an individual session is 30 minutes. For groups of 2 or more, sessions are up to 60 minutes.
Q: How often am I able to meet with a tutor?
A: The number of tutorial sessions may vary depending upon the budget. Currently, a maximum of twice per week is permitted.
Q: Do I need to make an appointment or can I just drop-in?
A: Most tutorial sessions are by appointment. However, we sometimes have tutors available for drop-in help.
Q: Am I able to have individual sessions or will I be in group sessions?
A: We may provide individual sessions. However, due to demand, sessions may have more than one student tutee. During walk-in sessions, the tutor will likely be working with more than one student.
Q: Who are your tutors?
A: Most tutors are peer students who have been approved by the class instructor(s). They have earned an “A” or “B” in the class or a higher division class and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Some tutors are individuals who have taken the comparable course(s) at another institution and have met the tutor qualifications.
Q: Am I able to request a specific tutor?
A: Yes, we will try to accommodate your request provided the tutor indeed tutors the class for which you are seeking assistance and the tutor’s schedule of availability matches your availability.
Q: What if I don’t feel I work well with my tutor? Can I change tutors?
A: We understand that individuals have different learning and teaching styles so it is not uncommon a change in tutors is requested. We strive to change your sessions to another tutor but it will depend upon the availability of other tutors for the class.
Q: What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
A: Contact the Center as soon as possible. Cancellations within 2 hours of an appointment may be considered as a No Show. If it is before or after hours, please be sure to leave your name and a call back number along with your tutor’s name and appointment date/time.
Q: Do you offer tutorial assistance outside WCC?
A: Most, if not all, tutorial sessions occur in the Center since we have software and materials needed for many classes. In addition to face-to-face tutorial sessions in the Center, we have limited “virtual” tutorial sessions for select classes. In virtual sessions, you will connect to a tutor via a computer with VOIP, or a computer and phone, or a phone alone.
Q: If I have a problem or question, who do I contact?
A: Call the Center to speak with a Center Staff member. S/He will try to resolve or answer your question or will set up a meeting with you.
